Edits
There’s a brief shot of the inside of a toilet bowl right as the killer vomits into it when things start getting hot between him and the hooker he picked up. I removed it.
Comments
I like the juxtaposition of her death as reflected in the TV during the broadcast but I wish we’d gotten at least one direct shot of her during the struggle. Nevertheless, it’s a terrific scene.

Excellent scene. I especially love how Michael put his other hand atop her head mid-struggle to reinforce his leverage. That was a really nice touch. I only wish she’d been barefoot – I’m not a sock fan.

The first time I saw this was on VHS in the 90s. The box cover featured a stylized three-picture collage of Melanie taped to the chair, so I rented a copy hoping for the best and was not disappointed. While she was suffocating, I remember thinking, “This is way too graphic. They’re going to cut away any moment now.” As it progressed, my eyes widened and my heart started racing. By the time she was dead, my jaw was on the floor. I could not believe how good it was, and it still holds up today. There are two other asphyxia scenes in the movie – a bagging and a ligature strangling – but this scene has always been my favorite.

I like to think there are a few obvious reasons why I love this scene but the principle one is that the killer kept her pinned firmly in place throughout the struggle and was patient enough to make her suffocate. She never escaped his grip, and she never got enough leverage to twist around or get an upper hand. It’s a really fucking kick-ass scene featuring a drop-dead gorgeous, naked redhead soaking in a Jacuzzi.
Fetish Elements
Nudity: Her breasts are in full view throughout most of the scene and her death, and we get a full-frontal shot when she stands during the setup to her death.
Edits
There’s a lengthy cut to a couple talking elsewhere in the house. I removed it.
